<image:title>About - About Me</image:title>
<image:caption>Hello! My name is Taryn McMillen, and I am an emerging professional who is looking to grow my education and skills within the art world by seeking experience in the field. Currently, I am working at Taylor & Harris Auctions as an art specialist. I was also a 2020 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern, and a 2020 graduate from California State University, Long Beach with a BA in Art History. I am interested in pursuing a career in the world of cultural institutions, and providing adequate representation for minority groups. I am particularly interested in the conservation of art and artifacts, and have had the opportunity to gain experience working with amazing objects in my work opportunities. I consider myself a life-long learner, and I enjoy bettering myself by always learning new skills. I have studied both Spanish and French, and I am currently learning and practicing Korean. I also enjoy traveling and learning about other cultures respectfully. I am committed to the greater representation of minority groups and people of color, as well as women’s empowerment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Published September 2020 While working as a curatorial intern at the Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, I had the opportunity to develop my own exhibit. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the exhibit had to be virtual, rather than in-person. However, I was responsible for developing the exhibit topic, compiling a list of exhibit objects, handling and photographing the selected objects, researching the exhibit topic, writing the intro panel as well as the object labels, and building and organizing the webpage for exhibit on the museum’s website. The site’s curator provided me feedback and support as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - 3D Printing - 3D Printing Project</image:title>
<image:caption>For this project, created in Dr. Mariah Proctor-Tiffany’s AH 497 Digital Art History course, I decided to scan my small bust of the Greek goddess Artemis and have a replica of it 3D printed in the University Innovation Space. I had purchased the stone bust from Goodwill for myself years ago, but it had dropped from my shelf and the head broke off. I wanted to make a copy so that I could enjoy the statue again in its full form. I worked with the Innovation Space staff to scan a digital copy of the statue, and I was given a file with many “holes” where the scanner was unable to read the object. Using MeshMixer was the most difficult aspect of the project for me, but I was able to use the sculpting tools to smooth out where the break was in the neck as well as rough areas from the scan. After the file was complete I chose the material (ABS Ivory) that most closely matched the original color, and sent it back to the Innovation Space to be printed. Overall, I am very happy with the finished product as well as the experience I have gained working with these 3D programs. (Screenshots below)</image:caption>

Brown and other art history students to co-curate this exhibition featuring the works of Japanese artist Tsuruya Kokei, featured at the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, CA. Students were responsible for writing contextual information to be displayed with certain prints, and deciding as a group upon the layout of the exhibition. The exhibition was on display from February to July 2019.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This group project was created with two other students in Dr. Mariah Proctor-Tiffany’s AH 497 Digital Art History class Fall 2019. This project utilized Northwestern University’s Knight Lab tool StoryMapJS to map out the city of Long Beach, California’s historic music scene. This interactive map includes the locations of notable music venues and stores as well as sound clips to enhance the experience of the Long Beach music scene.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - AR Art Experiences - Snapchat Lens Studio</image:title>
<image:caption>To achieve this project, I utilized Snapchat’s Lens Studio, which allows users to create their own custom Snapchat lenses using AR technology. Snapchat filters, which use facial recognition to add effects and accessories to live videos, are one of the most popular and well-known examples of AR. Lens Studio seemed to be the most user-friendly, which was ideal because of the little experience I had working with 3D rendering. Also, the program offered a variety of templates with most of the preprogramming already done, including spatial and ground recognition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This research was conducted during my time as a curatorial intern at the Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, under the 2020 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program. This paper was meant to be used as a resource for the museum during the development of their 1930s gallery rooms. I utilized research materials found from the web as well as the Rancho’s research library.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - K-Pop and Transcultural Korean Identity - K-Pop and Transcultural Korean Identity</image:title>
<image:caption>This research paper was written for Dr. Karen Kleinfelder’s Spring 2020 Art History Methodologies and Writing course. In this paper, I explore how the rise of the (South) Korean wave and Korean pop music (K-pop) alters both national and personal identity for Koreans. In this paper I utilize complexity theory, as well as Judith Butler’s concept of Gender Performance in order to explore the effects of K-pop from an art historical standpoint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This review was written for Prof. Moira West’s AH 455 Traditional Art of Africa course in Spring 2019, and is of the ongoing exhibition Spirits & Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA. I used this review to point out the reductive stereotypes of Pacific Island nations perpetuated by the exhibition, basing my analysis on both James Clifford’s concept of the Salvage Paradigm as well as Ann Marie Baldonado’s essay on representation.</image:caption>
